An Open Letter to the Gwangju Biennale 致光州雙年展公開信 광주비엔날레에 보내는 공개서한
To the Gwangju Biennale Foundation:
On August 15, the curator and artists participating in the Taiwan Pavilion at the 16th Gwangju Biennale made a joint statement criticizing the Gwangju Biennale Foundation for changing the exhibition’s original designation “Taiwan Pavilion” to “NTMoFA Pavilion” (the acronym for the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts) without the consent of the Taiwan Pavilion team. The statement also pointed out that the Foundation had disregarded repeated objections from the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts.
As participants in this edition of the Gwangju Biennale, we support their statement.
Art institutions should not become instruments for suppressing how people identify themselves. When participants’ right to name themselves is subjected to institutional restrictions without sufficient explanation, this is more than an administrative matter. It also concerns who has the right to decide how a group is represented in public space.
We hold deep respect for the history of Gwangju. It is precisely for this reason that we are especially concerned about this dispute over naming. We believe that the Gwangju Biennale Foundation has a responsibility to respond to the concerns that have been raised publicly and to reinstate the name “Taiwan Pavilion.”

8 月 15 日，參與第 16 屆光州雙年展台灣館的策展人與藝術家發表聯合聲明，批評光州雙年展財團法人未經台灣館團隊同意，即將展覽原本的名稱「台灣館」更改為「NTMoFA Pavilion」（國立臺灣美術館的英文縮寫）。聲明並指出，財團法人漠視國立臺灣美術館一再提出的異議。
作為本屆光州雙年展的參展者，我們支持他們的聲明。
藝術機構不應成為壓制人們自我認同的工具。當參展者的自我命名權在缺乏充分說明的情況下受到體制性的限制，這便不只是行政事務，更關乎誰有權決定一個群體如何在公共空間中被呈現。
我們對光州的歷史懷抱深刻的敬意。正因如此，我們對這起命名爭議格外關切。我們認為，光州雙年展財團法人有責任回應公開提出的質疑，並回復「台灣館」的名稱。

예술 기관은 사람들이 스스로를 규정하는 방식을 억압하는 도구가 되어서는 안 됩니다. 참여자가 스스로를 명명할 권리가 충분한 설명 없이 제도적으로 제한될 때, 이는 단순한 행정적 사안을 넘어섭니다. 그것은 한 집단이 공적 공간에서 어떻게 재현될지를 누가 결정하는가의 문제이기도 합니다.
우리는 광주의 역사에 깊은 경의를 표합니다. 바로 그렇기 때문에 이번 명칭 논란을 특별히 우려합니다. 우리는 (재)광주비엔날레가 공개적으로 제기된 우려에 응답하고 ‘타이완관’이라는 명칭을 회복할 책임이 있다고 믿습니다.
